It provides decent shade, but you can still see the sun shining through the fabric a little. I've never been sun burnt sitting under it, I just like to nit pick. It's been with me through several festivals with a bit of wear. The cone on the bottom pole came off immediately, but I suppose that it was meant to be inserted into soft sand rather than thick soil. The umbrella pole even comes in half so that it can fit into smaller spaces better.
